I live in Franklin, TN with my two dogs, Chip and Honey, and my husband. We have three children. Whitney is married and lives in Oakland, California. Rebecca is married and also lives in Franklin. Graham is a senior at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I teach third grade at Franklin Elementary School. This is my 36th year of teaching! I love children and enjoy reading out loud to my class. I believe that books provide children with a window into the past and a way to escape their current reality. I’ve always written stories for my students and finally decided to start to share those stories with other teachers, parents, and students who might enjoy them as well. This year, more than ever before, I’ve realized how important it is for children to learn the lessons that history can teach us. Children are capable of understanding important themes and applying those themes to their own lives. I want children to grapple with the difficult issues of our time in a way that is appropriate and authentic. That is my goal! My writing is intended to introduce children to some difficult events in history and to provide them with a way to discuss significant topics. I truly believe this quote by Ghandi, “If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children.”

I grew up in Dunwoody, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, and graduated from Vanderbilt University(Nashville, TN) in 1984. I am very proud of my southern roots.

Mi Mariposa is a fairly short read. It would work great as a classroom read aloud and could serve as a springboard for further discussion or study.

My next book, The Dog who Led Me Home, is coming soon!
